Alex Reyes Competing For Bullpen Spot

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt confirmed that top prospect Alex Reyes will be competing for a job on the Opening Day roster, and that roster spot will be in the bullpen.

Reyes is truly an elite talent with an insanely bright future, despite having Tommy John Surgery and missing 2017, then missing most of 2018 after surgery to repair a tendon in his back. He’s still not 100%, so this bullpen appointment is the right move.

Yes, I want Reyes’s arm in the rotation. But without it, I still think the Cardinals rotation is good enough to win the Central. Miles Mikolas is looking to build off a phenomenal All Star season. Jack Flaherty is just nasty. Michael Wacha seems to have found his old self all of St. Louis was ecstatic about when he first showed up. Adam Wainwright is refocused and healthy for the first time in years. Carlos Martinez is an ace, he just needs to get healthy. Daniel Ponce de Leon, Austin Gomber, John Gant, and Dakota Hudson are all solid options as well. I can think of worse #5 starters out there.

Just imagine a bullpen of Alex Reyes, Jordan Hicks, and Andrew Miller closing out the final innings. Maybe even throw C-Mart in there. I get giddy just thinking about it.

Even if Reyes is destined for the pen to start the year, there’s always the possibility he will make his way back into the rotation, especially if any of the other starters begin to struggle.

Either way, I’m happy. An arm like Alex Reyes doesn’t come along that often. Wherever he pitches, he will be a game-changer. Just gotta stay off the DL, my man.
