The Kansas City Chiefs begin the process of playing out the string on Sunday in Tennessee against the Titans.
The Chiefs have been eliminated from playoff contention and will be in the odd position of playing a game with nothing on the line and without their future Hall of Fame quarterback Patrick Mahomes due to his torn ACL.
This situation screams flat spot for Kansas City - and I think a flat performance is exactly what we are going to see.
The Chiefs have dropped six straight games against the spread and three straight road games outright, and they are facing a Titans team that has been fighting despite their hideous 2-12 record. Tennessee is a respectable 6-8 against the spread.
Even in their dominant days, the Chiefs haven’t covered often against bad teams like this. Kansas City is just 3-6-1 ATS over the last four seasons when facing a team with a win percentage of 25% or less.
The Titans haven’t won a home game all season, and I think they’re going to be fired up to spring the upset with this still being the Chiefs - and I think the Titans are going to do exactly that and win the game.
The line of KC -3 has obviously been adjusted to reflect the Mahomes injury, so to give myself a little more protection, I’m going to move the Titans up to +7.5 and pair them with the Lions on an alternate spread of -1.5 against the Steelers. The season is on the line for Detroit, and I’m bullish on the Lions coming through in this desperation spot. They have won 15 consecutive games coming off a loss, including going 14-1 ATS.
