Texas A&M 81, Mizzou 74
The Missouri Tigers continue their quest for an NCAA Tournament bid when they challenge the Texas A&M Aggies tonight in College Station.
Mizzou picked up an important road win at South Carolina over the weekend, lifting the Tigers to 6-4 in the SEC and leaving them needing to go 4-4 in their final eight games to secure a winning conference record and a likely bid to the Big Dance.
I wrote in this space that I liked the Tigers’ chances to beat the Gamecocks because South Carolina is not set up to exploit some of the weaknesses that Missouri has.
Unfortunately, I think the Aggies are a bad matchup for Mizzou.
The Tigers have a propensity to turn the ball over, ranking 263rd out of 365 Division One teams in turnover rate. The Aggies rank a solid 59th in the country in forcing turnovers, and they’re second in the SEC in turning teams over in conference play.
And three-point defense has been an issue for Missouri all season, as the Tigers rank #274 in the nation in that department. Texas A&M can light it up from deep, hitting 37.0% of their 3-point attempts this season (39th in the country).
Nearly half of A&M’s shot attempts come from behind the arc (47.8%), so Missouri needs to hope for an off shooting night from its opponent. Unfortunately, I think the Aggies are due for some progression to the mean after going 9-of-34 from 3 in a loss to Florida last time out.
It’s hard to win away from home in the SEC, and kudos to Missouri for getting it done at South Carolina. But it’s a tough ask to win back-to-back road games, especially against an A&M team that is hungry to respond after losing consecutive games to quality teams in Alabama and Florida. More winnable games are coming for the Tigers, but I think this one gets away from them tonight.
Pick: Texas A&M -6.5 at -112 on DraftKings (bet to -7.5)
