The Missouri Tigers need a big bounceback effort tonight when they host the #19 Vanderbilt Commodores.
The Tigers laid an egg in front of a sold-out Mizzou Arena crowd this past Saturday, falling to Texas 85-68 and failing to win a big bubble matchup that would have strengthened their NCAA Tournament chances.
At 17-8 overall and 7-5 in the SEC, Missouri is tasked with going at least 3-3 in the final six games to be in good position to make the Big Dance - and a huge test looms tonight.
Vanderbilt is ranked 19th in the AP poll and has won five of its last six games after a three-game losing streak in January. The Commodores average 88.7 points per game and do everything well offensively:
4th in the SEC in FG percentage (48.6%)
3rd in the SEC in 3-point FG percentage (36.1%)
2nd in the SEC in free throw percentage (77.9%)
Vanderbilt also takes care of the ball, leading the conference in turnover margin. The Commodores are also strong defensively, ranking 3rd in the SEC in opponent field goal percentage and 1st in 3-point field goal percentage defense.
This is a very tough matchup for Missouri on paper; however, this spread has moved significantly. The Tigers opened as 6.5-point underdogs, but this line has moved four points all the way down to 2.5 - which suggests a lot of professional bettors like Mizzou’s chances tonight.
The Tigers have a lot of Jekyll and Hyde in them, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see them play one of their best games of the season tonight after playing one of their worst games on Saturday. With their unpredictable nature, this game won’t make my Wednesday card.
The line flat out stinks. But I’ve learned over the years in gambling that in cases like that, you want to lean into the stink more times than not. So if you’re going to bet this one, I’d take a shot on the Tigers.
