KenPom Projection

Tennessee 75, Mizzou 70

The Missouri Tigers face a third straight ranked opponent when the #22 Tennessee Volunteers visit Columbia this evening.

The Tigers split their previous two games with Vanderbilt and Arkansas, leaving them likely needing two wins in their final four regular season contests to put themselves in position for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid.

Tennessee is a tough customer. The Vols are rolling with four straight wins and an 8-1 record over their last nine. They are relentless on the glass, ranking 1st in the country in offensive rebounding rate.

Tennessee also leads the SEC in scoring defense by allowing just 69.0 points per game.

The Vols make it tough on their opponents to score, but I think the Tigers are going to hold their own tonight. Mizzou is hitting its stride offensively, averaging 80.5 points per game over the last six contests.

But I think Tennessee is going to score plenty too because Missouri’s defense has started to regress. The Tigers have given up at least 80 points in four straight games, with all of those games going over.

These are also two big teams that don’t take a ton of 3’s and want to get to the rim. We have seen several Mizzou games lately result in foul fests in the second half with a parade of free throw shooters, and this matchup appears ripe for another game script like that.

Combine that with this projected to be a close game, and chances are good we see a lot of fouling in the final minute as the trailing team tries to catch up. I think that’ll be enough to see this game creep over the total.
